My Music Consumption

The first time I can remember listening to music was on the radio or through a tape player. Back then these ways were how most people managed to listen to their favourite music but now that technology has advanced immensely, the way that we listen to music has changed.

Nowadays many people possess an i-pod which is a portable music player that allows you to store your songs onto it and listen to your music wherever and whenever you want. This is the most popular and attractive way that people listen to music and its easy to see why. Most i-pods store easily two thousand songs and so people benefit from being able to have a wide variety of songs at their disposal to listen to whenever they want.

Another way of listening to music is through CD’s. Even though its not as popular as the i-pod, its still used every day.

In my lifetime I have only ever bought about three CD’s, reason being that i have an i-pod and find it easier and more appropriate to use. CD’s generally cost between nine-twelve pounds which is quite expensive for someone of my age and by having an i-pod I am able to get my music for free although I do this illegally.

Every month I would download all the new singles and albums released by using certain programmes on my computer. I download roughly 200 songs a month free of charge. Technically this is illegal but in my opinion I don’t see why I should pay large sums of money for my music when I am able to get it for free. Yes, it is against the law but I am merely one out of one hundred million people who also do it and so I don’t see why I should feel bad for doing it. The government knows its happening but still don’t do anything about it so until I am unable to get my music for free I will continue to download my music illegally.

The types of music programmes that I use to get my music are Limewire, Aires and Kazaa which are all illegal but they still offer me good quality sounding songs for free so why should I look elsewhere to download legally. From my experience of downloading music, I don’t think that I will ever pay for music again for I save myself money and I am able to sync the music onto my i-pod which is what I would listen to music on the most. If I can get away with downloading illegally then I will keep on doing it.

The bands that I enjoy listening to the most would be The Script or The Fray and they get paid by doing world tours, concerts and by the people who do download music legally and even though I am not one of these people, I don’t feel bad for them not receiving money because of people downloading their songs illegally because they already get paid very handsomely. I also feel that I support my favourite bands by attending their concerts and to be honest, concert tickets aren’t exactly cheap so I believe that going to their concerts is a good way of me doing my bit so that they do get paid.
